When I found out I was pregnant, my excitement was almost completely overshadowed by fear. I was terrified of pregnancy, becoming a parent and most of all, giving birth. We undertook a Hypnobirthing class with Tessa from 27 weeks in hopes of mentally readying ourselves for the final stages of pregnancy and labour and it was honestly the best thing we could have done. After the very first session, both my partner and I felt as though a huge weight had been lifted from our shoulders.
The course provided an incredible amount of knowledge—we felt completely prepared for what was to come—and armed us with tools to deal with the anxiety and stress related to parenthood. Having a baby and all that comes with it stopped being scary and in my mind, become something exciting and natural. I ended up needing an emergency c-section at 37 weeks and while this was a far cry from our birth plan, we were able to position the entire experience as a positive one, largely due to the hypnobirthing techniques we had learned. I was able to take control in hospital and ask questions when I felt I needed to. Most importantly I was able to utilise all the relaxation techniques Tessa had taught us to remain calm and present for what could have been a scary or traumatic experience. I felt entirely prepared, even though I wasn’t expecting to meet my baby for another few weeks!
Tessa completely changed the way I viewed birthing and took away all the anxieties I had around becoming a parent. She made sure I placed trust in my body and instincts and reassured me whenever my fears crept back up through the process. Tessa made sure we felt supported, prepared and educated and I’ll be eternally grateful to her and hypnobirthing for giving us the best possible birth experience!
